Interview with Richard Slansky, President of SpaceDev One of the key components that won the X-prize for SpaceShipOne in 2004 was to have a special rocket escape earth's orbit. SpaceDev constructed that engine. It burned rubber and laughing gas that cannot explode. Spacedev is coining the phrase "the age of end of the exploding rocket motor." The least expensive way to get a payload into space is on Orbital Sciences' Pegasus. Depending on the configuration, it will run you about $25 to 50 million. Spacedev recently finished a project launching a micro satellite for UC Berkeley and NASA into space. It sent back data on interstellar gasses and was a success. Interview time about 9 mins.
